Too Many Choices

While visiting Haiti recently, I ran across a couple of Americans who had lived in Jacmel, Haiti for the past 4 years. They had been back to the states only a handful of times over the past 4 years, so I asked them what is the biggest adjustment when you are in the US versus Haiti. They both said one Too Many Choices.

In Haiti, most of the country still lives day-to-day with very little choice. You get up in the morning with the chores associated with the necessities you need for living: food, water, cleanliness. No TV, no Good Morning America. No Today Show.

Many of the kids in the region where we visited ate either cornmeal or rice & beans everyday. When asked what their favorite food was, many of them said “Rice”. Imagine that, you eat the same meal everyday and your answer to your favorite meal is rice.

Here in America, if we have pizza today, heaven forbid if someone suggests pizza tomorrow. And deciding where to eat, or what to eat is the cause of many disagreements.

What’s wrong with too many choices? Stress. Discontent.

Limit your choices and improve your happiness.
